Snooker rules

Snooker is also called chess on a billiard table — and for good reason!

It’s a game that requires not only knowledge of physics and geometry but also vivid imagination — and when calculating points, you’ll need to recall your math skills too.

The game follows a strict sequence: only after potting a red ball may the player attempt a colored one. Potted red balls remain in the pockets, while potted colored balls are returned to their original spots on the table (as at the start of the game). If there is no referee, the opponent returns the potted colored ball to the table, and the player continues their scoring break.
Important: the player may not take the next shot until the colored ball has been returned to the table.

When no red balls remain on the table, the colored balls are potted in ascending point order (from the lowest-value yellow to the highest-value black).

What is a break? A break is an uninterrupted sequence of potted balls (red + color, then red + color, and so on). For example, the player pots a red ball (1 point) and a blue (5 points), then another red (1 point) and a black (7 points). Break = 14

The maximum possible break is 147.
The player who scores the most points during the game wins.

Each ball has its own point value:

All balls are played only with the white ball.

Red – 1 point

Yellow – 2 points

Green – 3 points

Brown – 4 points

Blue – 5 points

Pink – 6 points

Black – 7 points

Ball layout on the table:

After a foul, the turn passes to the opponent, but there is a choice: you may play yourself, or leave a complicated situation for your opponent to deal with.
Of course, there are more nuances in snooker rules (e.g., free ball, re-spotting situations, etc.), but these basics are more than enough to start enjoying the game.

Hand positions

Standard bridge (standard supporting-hand position).

Raised bridge (when striking the upper part of the white ball).

High bridge (when striking the white ball over another ball).

Rail shots

“Rest” (standard hand position on the rail).

“Loop bridge” (between the fingers).

Proper stance
